Chances are, you already make generous annual cash donations to your favorite charities and non-profit organizations.  You may also be contributing your time and talents to causes close to your heart.

But have you considered making a gift that will last beyond your lifetime?  You can decide to leave a legacy, and you don’t have to be a high-tech millionaire to do it. There are many creative ways to provide substantial support to a non-profit organization you admire.  You and your estate may also derive federal tax benefits from such charitable contributions.

Deferred giving

Stocks, real estate, IRAs, life insurance policies—these are just a few examples of the kinds of property you could give to GRDC.   Often such a gift is “deferred”: actual possession and use of the gift take place at some time in the future, most commonly at the death of  the donor.

WILLS – You can include a gift of cash, stocks or real estate to GRDC.

LIFE INSURANCE – You can name GRDC as the beneficiary on a life insurance policy you no longer need, or as a partial beneficiary on other life insurance policies.

IRAs and RETIREMENT ACCOUNTS – You can name GRDC as the beneficiary of your IRA or other retirement plan when you pass away.  The advantages are two-fold: your survivors can deduct the value of the IRA or retirement plan from the property that they must pay estate taxes on, and GRDC will not have to pay income tax on the asset received.

 Create a new option

You can also set up a trust, an annuity or a pooled income fund as a vehicle to make your gift work for you, your survivors, and for GRDC.  These vehicles allow you to realize immediate tax benefits and receive an income from your donation while you are still alive, as well as seeing the benefit of your donation.

CHARITABLE REMAINDER TRUST – Allows you to donate property and still retain an income interest in your donation.  You donate your property to a trust and name GRDC as the recipient.  The trust pays you income for life.  After your death, the assets go the GRDC.

CHARITABLE GIFT ANNUITY - You donate an asset to GRDC and GRDC in return pays you a percentage of its value for the period of your lifetime.

POOLED INCOME FUND - You can pool your contribution along with contributions from other donors to create one large trust, managed by GRDC.  The trust could provide you with income for the rest of your life, after which the property belongs to GRDC.

Gifts of assets other than cash

Supporting a non-profit organization can go beyond writing a check.  Consider these creative options for giving now:

STOCKS – When you give to GRDC a long-term, fully appreciated stock, you receive a charitable deduction for the full fair-market value of your gift while you escape any potential tax on the capital-gain element in the gifted property.

REAL ESTATE – GRDC can receive property from you, either in the Rosedale Grandmont area, or outside our neighborhood.  The same tax advantages accrue to you—the charitable deduction without the capital-gain tax.

Benefits for you and for GRDC

  • Depending upon the specific arrangements you choose, you could gain a number of benefits from your thoughtful charitable gift:

Satisfaction of knowing your gift supports GRDC in the long term

Income-tax savings through charitable deduction of the value of the gift

Avoidance of capital-gain tax on contributions of appreciated, long-term, capital-gain property

Elimination of federal estate tax on the value of the interest in the property passing to GRDC upon the donor’s death

Reduced estate-settlement costs

Consult your tax and legal advisors

GRDC would welcome your gift.  To ensure that you and GRDC derive the maximum tax benefits from your gift, we encourage you to consult your own tax and legal advisors.  GRDC can also put you in touch with planned giving professionals.  Allowable deductions for charitable gifts are subject to monthly revision, so expert advice is a necessity.
